A day in north Majorca

Majorca's Beaches

Are you looking to take a break from the golf for a day during your golf vacation and have a look around the island, then north of Majorca definitely worth a visit. Now we're talking not child friendly Alcudia, but we're talking about north of the north, as far north you can get without falling into the water. We're talking about the magic Formentor Peninsula, mountainous, barren places, in places overgrown forest.. A lovely scenery the road winds through. If you have not been here before you will be surprised.

Getting there
Start the day by purchasing a small picnic at the nearest supermarket, and make sure your camera batteries are charged (and do not forget the sunscreen!). If you go from Palma, drive towards Alcudia. The highway up towards Alcudia is broad and fine, and offers a nice view of the Tramuntana mountains. When you notice the increase of roundabouts (Mallorca is promised land of roundabouts), you should drive after the signs that say “Puerto de Pollensa”. If you drive towards ”Pollensa” you will drive on a small road, which certainly sooner or later takes you to Puerto de Pollensa, but for those of you who prefer a slightly straighter and especially broader way, it's better to follow the signs to “Puerto de Pollensa”. Once in Puerto de Pollensa, just follow the brown signs marked with a small umbrella and 'Formentor "in large white letters. For those who have not brought a picnic is the square of Puerto de Pollensa is an excellent place to stop and have a bite to eat.

Playa de Formentor

For those of us who are interested in snorkeling, or just appreciate beautiful and clear waters Playa Formentor is a true paradise. It is a popular beach, so you should come relatively early if you are fussy with where you lay down your towel. The further away on the beach you go the less dense it becomes among sunbathers, and are you looking to snorkel, you want to either go as far as possible on the beach or lie just about where the small sail boats are.

On this beach there is also a restaurant, but most you’ll have a better time a little bit for yourselves further along the beach. There you can lie in the water and bob around, watch the small fishies or enjoy the beautiful view where the steep mountains meet the sea. One of the best features of this beach is that here you can choose between wither lying in the sun, or in the cool shade of the pine trees that grow almost all the way down in the water in some places. Whatever you prefer, the way here is absolutely amazing, and certainly worth the trip!

Parking is available, for a fee of 8 €. You can also park along the road, without paying, but be aware that you may not park in prohibited area. The road is lined with green pine trees and shrubs. Sometimes you hear some crashing into the midst of a bush, but do not be afraid! In this area there are many wild goats, as you can be seen inside the bushes or in the trees. Yes, up in the trees. The goats here are amazingly adept at climbing trees.

The Formentor lighthouse

After a day of sun, swimming and snorkeling you should continue along the road, to reach the northernmost tip of Majorca. Along the way there are more bays, such as Cala Murta, but to reach these you can expect a longer and slightly more hilly walk. At the end of the road you will find the lighthouse “Faro de Formentor”, and here you can enjoy a great view, and a cold drink in the cafe located in the old lighthouse.

The lighthouse was opened in April 1863, after many years of hard work. Because of its isolated location workers were working even on Sundays and holidays. When Majorcas bishop found out about this, he decided that a temporary altar was to be established on the construction site, so the workers could celebrate Sunday Mass.

Here it is free to park, and here are often many people who want to enjoy the fine views. If you drive here, you need to be prepared for traffic, but the views are well worth it!
